Charlie Wi takes third round lead at the Crowne Plaza Invitational
Charlie Wi smashed a score of 4-under-par, 66 on Saturday to lead the $6.2-million Crowne Plaza Invitational, which is taking place at the par-70 Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas. The Professional Golf Association (PGA)
Tour’s event is carrying a winner’s share of $1.116 million in addition to 500 FedEx points.
The South Korean Wi teed off from the front and reeled five birdies against one bogey. He fired a set of birdies on the opening holes that set him into momentum. The player then approached the next green and signed it for a par,
but things did not go according to plan on the fourth hole, as Wi carded his second bogey of the tournament. His debut loss was seen in the first round, when Wi drove his ball into a fairway bunker.
The 39-year-old native of Seoul reeled one more birdie on the front nine and wrapped it with a score of 2-under par. Working his way against the windy conditions, the veteran birdied two more holes and sealed the day with an aggregate
of 13-under par, which gave him an edge of one stroke over David Toms.
Wi excelled in putting stats as he enjoyed an average of 25 in the third round, but could not replicate the same performance in the driving stats. He said that wind made driving difficult, which eventually reflected on his scorecard.
However, the golfer was satisfied with his putting.
Speaking to reporters after the day's play, Wi said, “It's such a crazy game. I don't know what to say. I know I made some good par putts out there. I don't want to say too much because golf is such a fickle game. You never know
what's going to happen tomorrow, so I don't want to say too much.”
The winner of 2006 May bank Malaysian Open, Wi also shed light on the pin position that was getting difficult, as the tournament was approaching towards the end. He said, “Of course, as the week progress the pins get tougher and
tougher and that’s the theme of the PGA TOUR. As a player, we just expect that.”
