Charlie Wie leads in Zurich Classic of New Orleans - Golf News
Charlie Wie who hails from Korea is currently in the lead with a score of 2-under par after three holes at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. The championship kicked off on the Tournament Players Club Louisiana in Avondale with a
prize-money of US$6,400,000 out of which US$1,116,000 will go to the winner.
Wie teed off in cloudy conditions, which is expected to change into rain by the end of Sunday. Wie teed off from the front and reeled two successive birdies starting from the second hole.
So far, he has relished a success rate of 67 percent in driving accuracy, which is good enough on a course, which has fairways protected by trees.
Eleven-way tie is seen on the second spot of the leader board, which includes the Aussie Greg Chalmers and the local bred Ryan Palmer. Chalmers also teed off from the front and birdied the second hole after hitting a fairway wood
on the course. Meanwhile, Palmer shared a low five with his caddie after opening the tournament with a 12-foot long birdie putt.
Similar start was adopted by Charley Hoffman, who drove his first shot of the day all the way to three yards from the tee and hit an iron to reach the green in two.
Nick Watney, Brandt Snedeker, Vijay Singh and Camilo Villegas are sitting on the 16th spot after one hole each. Watney teed from the back and par-equalled the first hole, while, the winner of the Heritage tournament, Snedeker
missed the birdie-putt on the opening hole at the back for a par.
On the other hand, Villegas missed the fairway on the tenth tee and had to wedge from a bunker on the left to reach the green in three shots.
Meanwhile, the Champion Tour player, Fred Funk bogeyed the second hole on the front and he is one-over par after two holes.
The 25th seed in the world, Justin Rose teed off from the back and he too could not attain much success. He drove the tee shot into the bunker and recovered it with a sand wedge, but could not save the par, as he chipped
from outside the green.
