Charlo Tengco wins round-of-16 battle at the 2011 MVP Sports Foundation Bingo Bonanza
Philippines’ Charlo Tengco qualified for the Men’s Singles quarter-final after beating Rabie Jason Oba-Ob in their round-of-16 fight at the 2011 MVP Sports Foundation Bingo Bonanza event, in Davao City, Philippines, on Sunday, July 31.
It was a wonderful fight that took three-sets of terrific badminton, as both shuttlers were playing with a great touch of precision. However, Charlo remained successful in the end as he won the rubber-set battle by working hard for 35 minutes.
Charlo failed to anticipate the shot placement of Rabie Jason in the first set as his challenger was playing with variation. He also threw away many points by executing hasty strokes. He failed to stop the aggressive advancement of his rival in the first
set and lost it in just 11 minutes with a big margin of 13-21.
However, Charlo played a better game in the following set as he changed his stroke selection and also put variation in his shots to put his opponent under pressure. His changed game worked well for him as he remained in good control of the pace of the set.
Charlo was far ahead of Rabie Jason in the second set and spared no room for him to score points. He clinched the second set in just 13 minutes with a 21-14 score and levelled the match at 1-1.
In the final game of this wonderful match, Charlo played terrific badminton as he made no mistakes in the opening half of the set. He continued to play at his highest speed and picked the bird quite early from all areas. Until the interval, he managed a
wonderful lead of 11-6.
After the one-minute break, Charlo moved forward in the right way as he showed no mercy to his opponent, who was playing a negative game by making many unforced errors. Charlo finished-off the final set in terrific fashion by winning it in just 11 minutes
with the score of 21-12. The 35-minute pre-quarter-final battle ended with a 13-21, 21-14 and 21-12 score on the board.
