Charlotte Bobcats close to finding their new head coach – NBA Update
According to Charlotte Bobcats president of basketball operations Rod Higgins, the team is close to ending their head hunt for the coaching position.
The final two candidates being labelled out are Indiana Pacers assistant coach Brian Shaw and Los Angeles Lakers assistant Quin Snyder. The duo will be interviewed by the team owner Michael Jordan this week.
Higgins also shed light on the status of NBA All Time great Jerry Sloan and confirmed it was Sloan who chose to poll out;
“It's all part of the process and I'm sure it's happened before," he said.
Out of all the people being interviewed for the position, Sloan probably had the most qualified resume because of his impressive record breaking 19 year tenure with Utah Jazz. In that era, he took the Salt Lake City team to the
NBA Finals twice, before eventually losing to Jordan and the Chicago Bulls.
Nonetheless Higgins seemed impresses by the repertoire of the remaining two candidates still in contention. He did not however rule out the possibility of other options.
"They are impressive candidates, maybe, I want to be as transparent as possible but at the same time there are certain things we want to keep private."
Shaw has won 5 championships in his career, three of which came while playing for the Lakers and two as an assistant coach working under the NBA great Phil Jackson. Snyder who replaced Shaw as the assistant coach with the Lakers
has previous experience of being head coach with NBDL and Missouri.
The Bobcats would have hoped to end the coaching hunt which started with10 candidates, but the matter still is still lingering and there have been reports that Shaw is more inclined to coach the Orlando Magic.
The candidates who has been considered for the position previously were Orlando assistant coach Patrick Ewing, Bobcats own Stephen Silas, ex-Portland coach Nate McMillan, Golden State Warriors, Michael Malone, Cleveland Cavalier’s
Nate Tibbetts, Memphis Grizzlies assistant Dave Joerger and St. John's University`s Mike Dunlap. Higgins hoped that the process will be over soon;
"It's going to take a little longer, We interviewed quite a few people and we're just making sure we have the right fit for us," Higgins said. "We're just trying to go through everyone's background."
Charlotte are currently holding work outs for several players to be considered in the draft and would have done themselves a great favour had they successfully completed their search for a head coach by now.
The Bobcats may have lost the number one pick in this year`s draft but the second and 31st overall pick still leave them with interesting options to consider. Possible prospects to be drafted second include the likes
of Thomas Robinson, Harrison Barnes, Bradley Beal and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.
