Chris Powell, the Charlton Athletic boss, denied rumors that he had made a move to sign West Ham United’s Benni McCarthy. The striker was recently dropped out of the first team at Upton Park which sparked speculation that he may be on his way out. It is suggested that the experienced striker is no longer part of Hammers boss Avram Grant’s long term plans.
Sheffield Wednesday, Charlton’s main rivals in the League One, are also linked with McCarthy but Powell insisted he was not interested in signing the player. Charlton are currently in the market for two players before the weekend clash against Tranmere http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Rovers-c40385. Powell’s side are desperately in need for reinforcements if they wish to finish the season on a high note.
Powell insisted he was not interested in McCarthy and that any such reports were purely speculation. He said while speaking to reporters, "I don't know where that story's come from. We haven't contacted West Ham and they haven't contacted us. He's a quality player but if we had a desire to bring him in then I would have made the call myself by now."
The Charlton Athletic boss revealed his side could not afford to bring in the out of favor West Ham striker, whom he expected to be worth more than he could afford. He continued, "You've got to look at so many factors with a player like that. Is he right for us? He's a Premier League player so he's on Premier League money so it's also a case of if we can manage to bring him in."
Newcastle United target John Arne Riise
Newcastle United are reportedly interested in John Arne Riise as a possible replacement for Jose Enrique, who is set to leave St James’ Park at the end of the season. The http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809.
Newcastle defender Enrique is linked with sides like Manchester United, Liverpool and Aston Villa which has convinced the Magpies they need to find a suitable replacement by the summer. The Norwegian international joined the Serie A side from Liverpool in 2008 and has been consistent for them ever since.
He is contracted to Roma until the end of the 2012 season and is worth an estimated €7.5-10 million. He has scored 10 goals and provided two assists for the Italian side but could be facing an early exit if the Premier League sides offer the right price.
Juventus eye Javier Mascherano
Recent reports reveal Juventus are targeting Javier Mascherano, who has failed to make an impact at Barcelona after his move there from Liverpool in the summer of 2010. The Argentine International moved to the Nou Camp from Anfield for a fee of £17 million but has not been able to recreate his success at his new side.
His success or lack of it has sparked rumors that Mascherano could be on his way out after failing to impress Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola. Guardiola is thought to be waiting for the end of the season so he can offload the midfielder to the highest bidder. Juventus so far are the only side who seem to be interested.
