Charter Cable - which cable modem to buy?

I want to upgrade to high speed internet with Charter Cable, and I'd prefer to just buy a cable modem rather than use whatever they rent out (since it's probably a cheap piece of junk). Do any other Charter customers have a recommendation? Or anybody who knows much about cable modems, do you like the Motorola Surfboard SBG900? I use a laptop, so I like the idea of going wireless, but I wonder how well that would work. Do I need to buy anything else besides the modem, like a router?
