This might sound really stupid..... but I am completely clueless. I would like to give this a go and I was wondering, is it just like using a normal thermometer? As in, i take my temp by putting the thermometer in my mouth?

  1. I use a regular thermometer and have shown a very clear ovulation pattern.  That extra .01 does nothing except for drive you up the wall.  If anyone on here has actually read TCOYF, they would know that you aren't looking for that extra number.  You aren't supposed to look at just one temp or two.  You are supposed to look at the pattern.  You can take your temp vaginally OR orally.  Vaginally can actually be more accurate.  You need at least 3 hours of sleep and you need to take your temp everyday at the same time.  Fertilityfriend.com is a great help.  You should move as little as possible before and during the time you are taking your temp.  Good luck and please don't spend the extra money on a stupid BBT.

  2. Regular digital fever thermometer is fine. Yes, it goes in your mouth.

Actually, a regular digital thermometer is what is recommended by all the fertility books. You are looking for an overall pattern, and that 0.01 is not going to make a difference.

Some people should not be allowed to give answers. wow.

  3. A REGULAR THERMOMETER WON'T GIVE U AS ACCURATE OF RESULTS AS A BASAL BODY THERMOMETER. THEY SELL THEM EVERYWHERE, LIKE AT WAL-MART OR TARGET EVEN FOR LESS THAN $10 USUALLY. IT BREAKS YOUR TEMPS DOWN ALOT MORE THAN A REGULAR THERMOMETER. U CAN TAKE IT IN YOUR MOUTH. JUST MAKE SURE U TAKE IT AT THE SAME TIME EVERYDAY THOUGH, AND WRITE IT DOWN AS SOON AS U CAN. I SUGGEST U GO TO FERTILITYFRIEND.COM, THEY MAKE A GRAPH FOR YOU, AND PIN POINT THE EXACT DAYS U OVULATED BASED ON YOUR TEMPS, IT'S AMAZING. GIVE THEM A TRY

  4. You have to use a BBT thermometer; you can purchase that at a pharmacy, like Walgreens.  You put it in your mouth, under your tongue, like normal.

You need to take it at the same time each day, if possible.  Also, you need to have at least 3 hours sleep before you take it.  And don't move around before taking it.

I highly suggest getting a digital one.  You can hear it beep when it is done--which may help you wake back up! (I've started to fall back asleep while it is being taken! lol! )

I would also chart your numbers on www.fertilityfriend.com to help you read your chart.  It's wonderful for giving you tips and telling you if you ovulated and such.

    Good luck!

Edit---wow, LiveinLove, such hostility!  I was told by my doc that I needed a BBT thermometer, not to use just a regular old digital.  So...there!

  5. Pick up the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler.  This book will teach you everything you need to know and answer all your questions regarding this method.

Purchase a basal body digital thermometer.  Walmart has them and so do many drugstores.  Take your temp. every morning when you first wake up.  Do not get up to pee or move around much until you have your temp. taken.  You need to have had a least 3 hours of uninterrupted sleep before taking your temp so adjust your time accordingly.  Record your temps. everyday beginning on the first day you begin your period.  Over the next few weeks your temps will fluctuate up and down a bit but when you ovulate, they will spike more than .3 degrees above any other temperature that you have taken during the past 6 days.  Your temps. will remain high for up to 16 days and then drop when you get your period.  Your cycle will look a bit different every month but you should start to see a pattern developing.  After a few months you will be able to accurately predict when you ovulate.  It's not a fool proof method but it helped me conceive both my kids and I'm using it again for #3.  Good luck.  Hope I helped.
