Lol, no, I just wanted to know kind of the purpose of building the Chartres Cathedral. Just basically why it was built. For a school building project.

  1. Medieval theologians believed that the aesthetic beauty of a religious structure would inspire its parishoners to meditation and belief.  Chartres was considered to be a gem in terms of the Gothic architecture of the Middle Ages.  As a cathedral, it was built for worship.  More specifically, it was made to house the veil of the Virgin Mary, given to the city of Chartres by Charles the Bald, Charlemagne's grandson, in 876.  It is considered to be a multi-media masterpiece.  Its stained glass windows in particular have distinguished it.  They represent the most intact collection of medieval glass in the world.  The works of stained glass read like an illuminated manuscript, illustrating the Bible, the lives of saints and even traditional crafts of France.

The Rose window, dating from the 13th century, contains thousands of pieces of glass tinted with cobalt and manganese, which were bound together with strips of lead.  Component figures also were outlined in this way.

Also noteworthy are the Jamb statues on the Royal Portals of the exterior of the cathedral.  The sculptures are representative of the early Gothic style in sculpture, and depict Old Testament kings and queens in an elongated fashion that contrasts with the more rounded style of the later Gothic era.  Tapestries were another common form of decoration in Gothic cathedrals.

  2. Previous church burned down in 1134 so chartres was built in its' place.  I hope this helps.
