Chase Buchanan outsmarts Tennys Sandgren to reach quarters – JSM Challenger 2012
In an all-American clash, wild card enterer Chase Buchanan tumbled his compatriot, Tennys Sandgren, in straight sets at the JSM Challenger of Champaign 2012 on Wednesday. He juggled up a 6-2, 6-3 victory against his fellow 21-year-old to charge into the quarter-finals at this hard court tournament taking place in Champaign, United States.
The Columbus native showed brilliant skills and abilities to overpower Sandgren in their second meeting. After earning the fame in one hour and 14 minutes, Buchanan avenged his loss at the Canada F9 two months ago and progressed into the final eight at this event.
Buchanan went berserk after entering this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event taking place form 10th to 17th November. After Sandgren held his serve in the opening game, the wild card recipient unleashed barrage of groundstrokes and reeled off following five games consequently. He plucked his serve one again and ultimately pulled out the opener with a 6-2 score line. Buchanan dusted away all three breakpoints he came across and converted two out of three break chances to his advantage.
Ranked 440th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Buchanan maintained his intensity in the proceeding set. He winded up four games in a row before the higher ranked American could hold on. Apart from losing his edge in the sixth game, Buchanan held his composure and bagged his remaining serves. He capitalised on another break chance in the last game and sealed the set by winning six games to three. The wild card impressively fended off three out of four breakpoints he faced and marked three out of five break chances to prevail.
The lower ranked American nudged up a better first serve share of 60 per cent as compared to his rival’s 54 per cent and impressively clinched 20 out of 31 points on it.
Up next for Buchanan is the British contender, Alex Bogdanovic, who upset third seeded Denis Kudla in straight sets to set up this duel. The Brit lost his serve once but cashed five out of nine break chances to formulate a 6-3, 6-2 victory in 66 minutes.
