Chase Headley in no hurry to ink deal with San Diego Padres - MLB News
Chase Headley, the star for the San Diego Padres in the 2012 season is in no hurry of signing an extension with his ball club and has said that he will only look into the matter after the season is over.
The third baseman won the Silver Slugger Award, Rawlings Gold Glove and two consecutive National League Player of the Month awards among other distinctions.
It is certainly not surprising that the administration of the San Diego ballclub is looking to sign a long term deal with Chase who appeared to be in top form last season. His form has not been as good but the fact he got injured during Spring Training could
well be the reason behind it.
Chase made is very clear in a recent interview to mlb.com that he is in no hurry of getting into the discussion with the Padres and is looking to do so once the season has closed.
"We made it abundantly clear [before] that we didn't want to talk about it during the season," Headley told MLB.com.
He feels that it will not have a good effect on him or the team during the season and it is best left for later.
"I didn't think that for me and for the team that it was good to get caught up with all of this during the season." Headley said.
Currently, Headley is making $8.75 million and is the second highest paid players in the Padres behind Carlos Quentin who is charging $9.5 million.
The switch hitter is flattered to be playing in San Diego and says that he loves it here. He feels that now is not the right time for the dealing.
"It's flattering they feel the way they feel about me. I love playing in San Diego, I love the fans," Headley said. "But I just don't think now is the time to get involved with this. That's it. If there's an opportunity to engage after the season, so be
it.”
The San Diego Padres will certainly be looking forward to a new deal. Chase is certainly one of the most potent hitting forces in all of Major League and is an asset for any team.
