Chase Headley sparks as San Diego Padres defeat Houston Astros, 7-2 – MLB Update
San Diego Padres’ third baseman, Chase Headley had an exemplary day with the bat as he went 2-for-4 and hit one RBI in the Padres’ 7-2 victory against the Houston Astros at Petco Park, San Diego on June 5.
The Astros were unable to add a run on the score-board at the top of the first inning while the Padres hit three runs during the first. Jason Bartlett tripled to deep left-centre and Chris Denorfia posted one run. Bartlett scored a second run for the Padres
when Brad Hawpe drove a single-run shot towards right-field. The third run of the first inning was taken by Ryan Ludwick on the grounder of Aaron Cunningham to short-stop position.
The score-board was 3-0 at the end of the first inning. Both teams failed to score a run in the second inning but they moved the score-card 4-1 by adding one run for their respective sides during the third inning. Carlos Lee singled to left-centre and Michael
Bourn posted his first run for the Astros. On the other side, Bartlett added a single run on the double-run shot of Headley towards deep left-centre.
Fourth inning passed without any run from both sides. In the fifth inning, the Astros’ batters contributed one run to reduce the lead 4-2 when Hunter Pence singled to left-field, Angel Sanchez posted one run and Bourn occupied second base rapidly.
No run was taken by any batter during the sixth inning. Headley and Ludwick both singled on the drive of Alberto Gonzalez to right-field and extended the Padres’ lead 6-2 in the seventh inning. The Padres got a 7-2 lead when Denorfia added one run and Bartlett
advanced to second base. The pitchers did not allow a run in the ninth inning.
The Padres’ manager, Bud Black was satisfied with the way his team played tonight. He said, "I think on the last road trip, I saw signs of us playing a total game. I'm seeing the defense tightening up a little bit, I'm seeing the bats swinging better.”
Mat Latos also played a key role in the Padres’ victory as he pitched five innings with an ERA of 3.94 and gave two runs on six hits with two earned runs. He struck-out three batters and permitted two walks on 98 pitches.
