Chase Kalisz excels in Men’s 200m IM prelims – Junior Pan Pacific Championships
Chase Kalisz of USA excelled in the qualifying rounds of Men’s 200m Individual Medley (IM) on fourth day of the 2012 Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Honolulu, Hawaii on Sunday, August 26.
Kalisz experienced strong resistance from Japanese teenage veteran, Daiya Seto in the four-lap IM discipline but with his utter determination, he qualified for the playoff as strongest swimmer for the title.
Kalisz stayed just a touch ahead of his following swimmer and secured the fastest qualification spot of the race by posting a time of 2 minutes and 01.48 seconds.
His tremendous pace placed him 0.19 seconds ahead of Seto, who entered the final round as second fastest swimmer by clocking a time of 2 minutes and 01.67 seconds.
Third finest qualifying spot of the race was obtained by Ty Stewart of USA, who stayed nearly one body length behind and clocked a time of 2 minutes and 02.45 seconds.
Subsequently, Stewart remained just 0.16 seconds lucky from his following rival, Keita Sunama of Japan, who transpired on the finishing end as fourth fastest finisher and entered the playoff with a 2 minutes and 02.61 seconds effort.
The Japanese expert was chased by Jared Gilliland of Australia, who suffered a loss of three body lengths from his foregoing finisher and qualified for the final with an effort of 2 minutes and 05.19 seconds.
Gilliland was chased by Evan White of Canada, who stayed 0.45 seconds slower and finished sixth in the event by submitting a time of 2 minutes and 05.64 seconds.
Seventh fastest qualification spot of the race was obtained by Jonathan Brown of Canada, who stayed just a half body length behind and hit the wall with an effort of 2 minutes and 06.15 seconds.
Brown was traced by Eugene Tee of Australia, who remained one and a half body length behind and posted a time of 2 minutes and 07.69 seconds.
Kalisz was contented with his top finish in the prelims and was hopeful of dominating the playoff of the event saying that he would give his best shot in the final to capture gold medal.
