Chase Rettig named new starter for Boston College

Boston College Eagles’ head coach Frank Spaziani announced that freshman Chase Rettig will be the club’s new starter when they face Notre Dame this weekend.

Boston College struggled in their week-four game against Virginia Tech. The Hokies hosted the Eagles and dealt out an embarrassing 19-0 victory to the visitors. The shutout marked the first time the club had been held off the scoreboard since 1998, ending a
149 game stretch of earning at least a point.

The game at Virginia Tech was split between Dave Shinskie and Mike Marscovetra. The two quarterbacks had a terrible day against the Hokies. Shinskie was only able to complete 11 of his 25 attempts for 130 yards, while tossing two interceptions. The sophomore
was replaced by Marscovetra who did not fair much better. The New Jersey native only managed 50 yards through the air. The two quarterbacks were sacked a total of six times on the day, a stat which Spaziani does not blame entirely on his offensive line.

Rettig has yet to take a snap in the NCAA. Nevertheless, the untested freshman will be the clubs choice to go up against a desperate Notre Dame squad.

A team source spoke to the Boston Globe Rettig about Rettig starting on Saturday, saying. “Chase is going to start and Mike and Dave will battle for number two. Chase took about 80 percent of the snaps in practice today.”

If Rettig is not able to put together a strong performance against Notre Dame the quarterback controversy will surely start up again, as Shinskie has managed to lead the club to two wins this season.

The Eagles have played their way to a 2-1 record and currently sit fourth in the ACC Atlantic. The club earned wins over Weber State and Kent State before their loss to Virginia Tech last week.
