Chase Wilson and Conner Coffin move into the ASP 4-Star Vans Pier Classic Semi-finals – Surfing News
America’s Chase Wilson and his fellow countryman Conner Coffin made their way through into the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 4-Star Vans Pier Classic Semi-finals after claiming top honours in their respective Quarter-finals that went down at
the Huntington Beach Pier in California, America, on Sunday, April 1.
America’s Nat Young and his compatriot Gabe Kling got themselves added to the Semi-finals line-up as well after securing runner-up place in the third and fourth Quarter-final respectively.
The competition field had initially been a mixture of both local as well as international surfers from around the globe. However, it had been trimmed down to contain only American and Hawaiian surfers while the foreigners got eliminated by failing to tame
the local talent in testing surfing conditions.
Squaring off with his fellow countrymen Young, Asher Nolan and Luke Davis in the third Quarter-final, Wilson managed to emerge as a standout performer through both his skills as well as luck.
The sudden decline in frequency of scoring opportunities had pushed all four American on the back-foot. However, Wilson found a relatively juicy wave in the late stages of the four-man battle to post a 6.50 on the score-board and immediately followed it
up with a 5.60-point wave to finish with a heat-total of 12.10 points. The score turned out to be sufficient to take him to victory.
Young successfully advanced through into the Semi-final as well after scoring a 6.67 off his first business-wave and soon following it up with a 5.00-point wave to finish with a heat-total of 11.67 points.
Nolan and Davis failed to make much of an impact during the course of the heat despite the high expectations from them. The former finish in third place with a heat-total of 9.70 points, whereas Davis rounded out the bottom-position with a two-wave total
of 8.43 points. The lacklustre performance led to the elimination of both the surfers from the competition.
The fourth Quarter-final turned out to be yet another low-scoring affair which ended in a tie between Coffin and Kling. Both the surfers finished with a heat-total of 10.50 points, which led to the determination of the winner through higher single-wave score.
This went in favour of Coffin as he had scored a 6.33 off his first business-wave against Kling’s 6.10-point ride. However, both the surfers consequently advanced through into the Semi-finals.
Hawaii’s Gavin Gillette and Joel Centeio got eliminated from the ASP 4-Star event after finishing with a heat-total of 6.67 and 5.73-point wave respectively.
