Chase d’Arnaud sparks as Pittsburgh Pirates edge past St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 – MLB Update
Pittsburgh Pirates’ third baseman, Chase d’Arnaud had a remarkable day with the bat as he hit two decisive RBIs and went 1-for-4 with an average of .228 in the Pirates’ 4-3 win against the St. Louis Cardinals at PNC Park, Philadelphia on July 24.
During the first inning, Jon Jay drove a single-run shot for the Cardinals but Ryan Theriot was grounded out to third base and Lance Berkman grounded out to short-stop position without providing some runs to their team. Similarly, the Pirates’ batters also
failed to score runs as D’Arnaud lined out to centre-field, Matt Diaz grounded out to pitcher and Neil Walker struck-out swinging, at the bottom of the first inning.
The Cardinals led off with 1-0 during the second inning when Gerald Laird hit a sacrifice fly to centre-field and Colby Rasmus posted a single run. The Pirates’ batters posted one run at the bottom of the third inning to tie the game 1-all. D’Arnaud doubled
towards deep left-field and Eric Fryer added one run on the score-board.
The pitchers resisted the flow of runs due to their outstanding throws in the fourth inning and got the batters out. The Pirates’ starter, Charlie Morton was little bit shaky with his pitching as he threw for just over five innings with an ERA of 3.69 and
permitted three runs on six hits. He gave up three earned runs and five walks to the Cardinals’ batters. Morton was able to strike-out only three batters on his 94 pitches.
At the top of the fifth inning, the Cardinals went ahead with one run but the Pirates again levelled the game 2-2 by adding a tie run at the bottom of the fifth inning. Daniel Descalso posted one run and Theriot moved to second base on a wild pitch of Morton.
On the other side, Morton hit a sacrifice fly to centre-field and Ronny Cedeno scored one run for the Pirates.
The Cardinals went ahead 3-2 in the sixth inning when Rasmus homered (423 feet) to right-field. However, during the seventh inning, the game again tied with 3-3 when Steve Pearce hit a grounder into double play and Cedeno contributed a tie run.
In the additional 10th inning, d’Arnaud hit a sacrifice bunt towards centre-field and Xavier Paul posted a tie-breaking run to give the Pirates a 4-3 lead. With this exciting win, the Pirates avoided the three-game sweep against the Cardinals
and ended it 2-1.
