Hi, I am a 17 year old, and yesterday i was on a chat room, and i was chatting to a 15 year old girl. We seemed to get on at first, then she suggested naughty talk. We had just started doing abit role playing untill a message from the fbi had come up warning me and threatening me accusing me of been a pedofile. It sounded very serious and you could just tell this was not that same girl talking.He/She asked me for my name and age, but they still didnt believe me. They carried on to say that they could trace me through my ip adress. I carried on the conversation appoligising throuhout, they warned me never to return to the chat room or they would tell my dad everything that had gone on. I am now really worried as i was using my parents computer.Could they really contact my parents? I have not been able to sleep for nights, and i am so worried that i may have someone watching me or the police come knocking on my phone. I feel like destroying the computers. I am so down, can anyone help

  1. It's a ruse. The FBI, or any authority, does not browse chatrooms, period.

"Talking naughty" is not a crime, no matter what the age. Physically contacting them for "naughty" actions IS a crime if someone is underage.

Any authority figure, including the FBI, would not "question" or "interrogate" someone via chat, or email, or IM, or any other form of Internet-based, anonymous communication.

If you had done something serious enough to attract the attention of some authority, wouldn't you expect them to conduct correspondence in a more professional and legitimate manner? Official mail perhaps, or maybe even in person?

You cannot trace someone's IP address. An IP address simply allows computers to locate and communicate other computers on a logical (not geographic) network. You cannot take an IP address and determine someone's address, name, social security number, bank account number, credit card number, shoe size, or favorite color.

I know several people who do the FBI chat thing because it's funny. You pose as a young girl, start talking nasty, and then pretend the FBI jumps in. It's funny watching naive people actually think the FBI is contacting someone over a chat session, and watching them freak out about it.

If you think it's cruel and mean, get over it. It's just a prank. I would worry about your lack of common sense.

I'm not trying to offend you, but you're in a dangerous situation. You could be tricked into giving up personal or sensitive information because you believed something that happened on the internet. In the future, what happens if an official-looking email from your bank is asking for you to respond with your account number and PIN for "verification purposes"? Would you reply?

NEVER BELIEVE ANYTHING THAT HAPPENS ON THE INTERNET. If any business or government agency has to contact you, they will do so in a legitimate manner, not online.

As far as the FBI is concerned, don't worry about it. It's just someone having fun playing on your ignorance.

  2. Sounds like a joke from someone.

I don't know what chat you are talking about, but if it's some small chat then it might have some backdoors when other people could interfere.

Or that girl maybe was not a 15 y.o. girl too.

In any case, you should not be scared like this. Next time, watch what you are saying. Even in the chat.

  3. the fbi doesnt deal with pedophiles directly that is more local police. that was probably that little girls dad

  4. I'll tell you honestly - that all sounds fishy to me.

I hope you didn't give them your full and correct name because it quite possibly wasn't the fbi

the more I read what you said happened the more I suspected it wasn't

especially the part where they warned you not to go back or they will "tell your dad" - the question I have is: if they didn't believe you were who you said you were why would they threaten that?

From what I've heard it's true that they sometimes pose as teenagers to try to catch pedofiles - but I've also heard that some private citizens do that as well and it sounds like it could've quite possibly been the latter.

If it was a private citizen (although I understand what they're trying to do) they overstepped their bounds tremendously by identifying themselves as fbi and asking for your personal information. That's illegal in itself and the asking for your personal information most likely violates the chat's terms of use.

If you are 17 you really did nothing wrong so you shouldn't worry about it.

You could also contact the chat's administration and tell them about it. Although you may be scared to do that you could find out for sure and put your mind at rest.

  5. The best thing to do is to not use chat rooms with people you don't know (or just don't use them at all). Another suggestion, don't use bad language with people over the internet. I believe it is illegal. The chances this person is from the FBI is probably little to none. The person you were talking to was probably the pedofile. He/She wanted you information, not the FBI. The best thing to do would be to tell your parents. I know you might think this is crazy, but after they are done explaining to you how dangerous the internet is they might be able to help you (ex. Calling the FBI to see if you are in trouble).

  6. I doubt anyone will come knocking on your phone. This was NOT the FBI, they do NOT join in on chat, if they had any really serious worries about you they would NOT warn you. They would just turn up. It was probably a parent or other relative, NEVER give out personal information to anything like this, as it could be a scam for identity theft. If it had been me, I would have reported it to the FBI, they will take this very seriously (impersonating an agent). Just forget it.

  7. someone is punking your *** but do be careful in future who you do talk to on a pc i mean they might say they are older than you think and female (and turn out to be a guy) chat rooms are dangerous places be careful in future and never ever give out your real name or address in a chat room

  8. Yes, they can track you, but that would be hard, and complicated, i.e. go to http://www.iplocationfinder.com/ it's not usually right on, at least not for me, but it's close.

Now, to actually get the info though, they'd have to get into the site, and IF the site had somthing for tracking who came, they could get your IP.

But not to worry, the chances of there actually being and FBI agent just happening to hang around in that chat toom, unlikly, I say thing because the "guy" just happend to show up at that time.

I'd think is 15 year old and friend or somthing. HOWEVER! I'd suggest two things a a mojor precaution! don't talk personal stuff with sombody younger then you, only if they are older, and better yet, don't talk about that stuff at all.

I'd still be going back to that room (if I went in chat rooms) and if they happend to show up again, I'd suggest you just tell them to get a life.

    Also,you didn't break any laws.

What sort of things were you asking anyways?

  9. Don't worry about it. That was DEFINITELY NOT the FBI or anyone. The wouldn't just downright ask you for your age etc. and if it was her that initiated that naughty talk, then you have nothing to worry about. It's just some cyber bully. Might have been her older/younger brother perhaps? It was definitely not anyone of authority.
