what if an ordinary citizen wanted to pretend to be a kid in a chat room, and helped police track down these pedophiles?

Sounds like a defense used by an older famous rock star that had downloaded child p**n because he was " doing a study and wanting to help Police out". This occurred about 4-5 years ago in the UK I believe.

Being an agent of the police is one thing and there are rules to go by. If you choose to do this and an arrest or some trouble arises, you have been warned.

It will appear that you are suspect whatever your true intentions are. It is also quite possible the "Kid" you are chatting with, will be a cop and YOU will be in trouble.

The Police know how to do this and have been doing so for quite a number of years.

Don't even attempt it.  That is not in the best interest of the potential victims or you.  Leave it to the experts/police.  You can do more harm than good regardless of your intentions.

I believe it's called becoming a confidential informant.  You have to sign some papers, etc. and basically work for the police.  Even if you don't get paid- it still needs to be official.  Don't attempt to do it on your own- you could get in trouble and you won't be helping anyone.
