  1. Chaucer began this process with the intention of have each of the 30 characters tell 2 different stories on the way to the inn, and then 2 when they left!  This was a huge project, that remains, unfortunately unfinished.  He never was able to complete his process.  But you are correct in your assumption that his characters were from 3 different strata of the population.  It has been studied, and written about for hundreds of years, and there will always be unanswered questions, because Chaucer is not around to answer for himself.  Several of the stories have been set to music, plays have been written about them, and the characters have been studdied!  These 'Tales' are extremely interesting, and fun to read and study!  Thank you for your question.
