Chauncey Billups undergoes a successful leg surgery - NBA Update
Los Angeles Clippers veteran point guard, Chauncey Billups, who would not be participating in any Clippers game for the remainder of the season, underwent a surgery on his torn Achilles tendon on Wednesday.
The surgery was successful and Billups, after a brief stay at the hospital would head back to Los Angeles to start his rehabilitation.
The point guard, who was amnestied by the New York Knicks in the pre-season before being claimed off the waivers by the Clippers, injured himself in the fourth quarter of the game against the Orlando Magic on 6th February.
The injury occurred without any contact as Chauncey was trying to turn back towards the defensive side. Billups' initial reaction suggested the seriousness of it and when MRI was done later, it turned out that he had torn his Achilles
Tendon.
This was a huge setback for the Clippers as Billups had been a regular starter for them and his offensive approach and perimeter shooting had led the Clips to many wins in the season. Coach Vinny Del Negro admitted that next few
months are going to be very tough for his guard, but was hopeful, Chauncey would recover soon and continue to be the part of the team in the future.
"He had successful surgery and everything went well, Vinny said. "He needs some rest and to spend some time with his family. He has a pretty difficult rehab (ahead) and we're here to support him and talk to him. He'll be back here.
Chauncey's a basketball guy."
"He wants to be around the team and we want him around the team. He's a great influence for our organization and our team. "He's a veteran guy and he has the respect of the players. Those will be conversations we'll have a little
bit. Hopefully we can get him back here as soon as possible."
Billups joined the Clippers on 12th December 2011 and instantly gelled with the likes of Chris Paul, Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan. He played in 20 games this season and was going great guns at an average of 14.9
points, 4.0 assists and 2.5 rebounds.
It was his lobbying that brought Kenyon Martin to Lob City and it is understood that he is eagerly helping the Clippers in the pursuit of J.R Smith, who will be arriving in US after participating in the Chinese basketball league.
