Chauncy Welliver beats Bert Cooper to defend WBC Continental Americas heavyweight title - Boxing News
Chauncy Welliver, the current WBO Asia Pacific and WBO oriental heavyweight champion, successfully defended and retained his precious WBC Continental Americas heavyweight gold for the seventh consecutive time against veteran Bert Cooper, the former WBF heavyweight
champion, in a 10-round bout held on April 5, 2012.
The bout co-headlined the pay-per-view organised and promoted by Kim Woods of MFD Promotions and the ring for the event was stretched at Capitol Plaza Hotel situated in Jefferson City, Missouri, United States.
The Thursday night extravaganza was headlined by the PABA heavyweight title bout between Billy Wright and Raymond Ochieng. Welliver was entering in his seventh WBC Continental Americas title defence bout and was extremely confident on collecting a huge win
due to various facets.
The Kiwi Chauncy and the American Bert both were entering in their career’s 63rd bout but still a substantial difference was visible in the resume of both pugilists. Chauncy boasted 52 wins and 20 of them by knockout.
On the contrary, Bert exhibited just 38 wins and 31 of them by knockout. Despite the good knockout proficiency, it was not enough to intimidate the champion Welliver since Cooper tarnished his resume heavily by 23 losses.
Moreover, Chauncy had the huge height advantage which gave him considerable chances to throw huge jabs from a safe distance. Apart from all these aspects, Welliver has almost four to five titles round his waist. To make things worse, the New Zealander orthodox
pugilist was on a huge win streak as compared to Bert who got nailed by a rookie Luis Ortiz.
In a nut shell, Chauncy, infamous as the ‘Hillyard Hammer’, was the winner of the bout from the very beginning. The whole bout witnessed the Kiwi having a clear upper hand over the 46-year-old Cooper who was unable to defend himself properly.
With the last rounds closing by, Bert got fatigued which gave Chauncy ample chance to batter him. The 10-round wild ride ended and all the three designated judges allocated 90-100, 91-99, and 91-99 to Chauncy.
After the bout, Welliver while praising his opponent’s effort said, “I feel tremendous; I felt just the same in the tenth as I did in the first. Everything came together physically. He really came to fight, he wanted that ranking and he really tried. I’m
not going to lie and say he was the best fighter in the world, but he came to fight. But I am getting more confidence in myself; it’s not about what they do. It’s what I do and what I did last night.”
Welliver has strengthened his reign and now has 53 wins out of a total 63 bouts as compared to Bert who has collected his career’s 24th defeat and must now consider the tough decision of hanging the gloves.
