Chavez: I respect Sergio as a boxer, but not as a person – Boxing News
Trash-talking is the fun of boxing. Before every major event, fighters throw verbal assaults at each other just to gain public attention. However, when it comes to the battle like the one between Julio Cesar Chavez jr. and Sergio Martinez, trash-talking
is very much real. It is not just a way of promoting the event but it is about revenge and cementing legacies.
WBC middleweight champion Julio Chavez currently stands with 46 wins, 0 losses, 1 tie and 32 knockouts in his portfolio. Unfortunately, none of his achievements have been praised by fans or analysts around, calling him a paper champion.
To prove all wrong, Chavez will be going head to head against Sergio Martinez, who stands with 49 wins, 2 losses, 2 ties and 28 knockouts in his portfolio. This is the moment for Chavez to end all the disrespecting for good and cement his legacy as one of
the best middleweight fighters to ever live.
“Boxing is a turf war. It's about owning the ring, taking the high ground and keeping it, and the better and most prepared fighter will be the one who dictates and controls the action,” said Chavez in an interview with ESPN.
“Martinez has a difficult style, but it's up to me to get him -- to fight my fight, not his. And to do that will require that I assert my power and utilize my advantages in youth, stamina, height and reach, and to pressure him every minute of every round.
I have developed the right strategy not just to beat him but to beat him badly.”
According to Chavez, Martinez is an easy kill, all it requires is a little patience.
When asked if he has taken the rivalry with Martinez personally, the WBC champion iterated that he respect Martinez as a boxer but not as a person. According to Chavez, Martinez has said a lot about him, and most of it is not even true.
Chavez feels Martinez has disrespected and underestimated him, as a person and as a fighter. The WBC champion assures Martinez will pay for his trash-talking in the ring.
