Chavez Jr. on the verge of losing his WBC title if he fails to face Sergio Martinez – Boxing News
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., the current WBC middleweight champion, can lose his WBC title if he does not face Sergio Martinez, the current mandatory challenger. Talks between both the camps will start soon, but if they are unable to reach an agreement then probably
the WBC will strip Chavez of his title.
In his recent interview, President for the WBC (World Boxing Council) Jose Sulaiman clearly mentioned that if Chavez is unable to defend his title against Sergio then the WBC would be forced to take strict action against him.
The WBC, at its 49th annual convention last year, had declared that Chavez has to face Martinez at any cost to retain his title. The WBC also allowed Chavez to have one fight prior to his match with Sergio Martinez. Marco Antonio Rubio, the current
No. 1 WBC contender was select as Chavez’s opponent but the event never took place, which irked Jose Sulaiman.
This time, Sulaiman is expecting Chavez to go for the fight against Martinez but he believes the champion is not in the mood of putting his title on the line.
In his recent interview, Sulaiman said that Chavez is not afraid of the fight but his promoters want him to put the title on the line. His exact words were, “It is not Chavez who does not want the fight, it is his promoter.”
As of now, no reports of negotiations between both the camps have come in. As Sulaiman has declared, negotiations will start from tomorrow, March 18, 2012. If Chavez and his camp think they should move on with the fight then it will be an event to watch.
However, if both the camps do not come to an agreement, then Chavez will have to face the embarrassment of being stripped of his titles by the WBC. Whatever the case maybe, Sulaiman is sure that Chavez will take this opportunity and go for the title match.
After all, he has to do one day or another and it is better to lose his title in the ring instead of being stripped of by the WBC.
