Chawalit Plaphol creates history at the Zaykabar Myanmar Open presented by Alpine
Chawalit Plaphol fired each of the last two holes, in the final round of the Zaykabar Myanmar Open presented by Alpine , to stun his opponents and the spectators, as he took home the prestigious title by taking a one-stroke victory over Mithun Perera.
The tournament was being staged at the Royal Mingalardon Golf and Country Club, featuring some of the best Asian Tour players from different parts of the world.
Perera, who started his final round campaign with the 13th place in hand, made a strong charge on the leaderboard after firing a seven-under par 65, to take the clubhouse lead, with a 17-under par score.
His performance included seven birdies, five of which came on the back nine of the course.
Plaphol, in the meantime, was holding the lead, entering the final round. When he started his final round campaign, he found Perera in front of him on the leaderboard.
He then marked a decent start by carding birdies on the second and the fifth hole. Thereafter, he conceded a bogey on the ninth hole, to reach the turn in one under.
The 14th hole witnessed him adding another shot to his scorecard, which allowed him to share the lead with Perera. However, a bogey on the 15th hole pushed him back to the share of the second place once again.
After recording a par putt on the 16th hole, he made a strong comeback and birdied each of the last two holes he played, to ruin Perera’s dream of recording his name in the history books.
“I’m happy but a first win in two years is not enough! I want to win more Asian Tour titles. I knew at the 17th hole that Mithun was on 17-under. Luckily, I managed to hole a 15-foot birdie putt (17) to tie for the lead,” smiled Chawalit.
“It wasn’t smooth for me during the front nine because I was forcing myself to play it safe. I gave myself a bit of pressure and it felt better on the back. This win gives me more confidence to play on the Asian Tour,” he added.
