Cheap Biltong?

Anyone know where I can find cheap Biltong in the USA?Its grossly overpriced in the online stores...

  2. Unless as Cakes says, you are living in a very humid climate, there is no reason why you should not make your own. Try one slice first...see what happens. Don't forget to surround the biltong with those thin nets that keep flies out. Getting the spices should not be a problem at all as they are the standard spices in one's kitchen. Salt, pepper, vinegar, coriander seeds etc

  3. I am in South Africa and can not help you with the answer you want. Get yourself a biltong maker in the USA or import one from South Africa and start a business. You could make a few dollars.

    Barend, I can  imagine that it is possible to dry biltong in a thermo-fan (convection) oven.  With a very low, or almost no temperature, one just simulates the wind-drying process.  In areas where the air is not as dry as in South Africa, like in Germany, it will be impossible to dry biltong outside.  I also made my appelkoossmeer in the oven.  It would have gone mouldy trying to get it to air-dry.

  5. Commonly known as beef jerky and those who produces it are regulated by the FDA. . .Food and Drug Administration.

    Only buy from reputable organizations, some may sell you dog meat or who knows what. . .BTW that goes for South Africa as well.  The company noted below sells beef, buffalo and a variety of flavors such as spicy, smoked or teriyaki etc.

  6. Make your own.

    Do an internet search for a recipe. Spices are readily available.

    A convection oven set on a very low temperature makes a very good biltong maker.

    Barend: A convection oven is a fan assisted oven ie it blows hot air.

  7. I would say that you get some spices imported from SA and then make you own as it is very easy. The hardest is to keep the cats away ask me I have them in the yard most of the time.

    Mr D how do you make biltong with a oven when it is air dried meat? I have about 30kg hanging outside the back.

    add* Cakes it is freezing in Joburg this time of year and my biltong is doing fine and from hanging it should be 10-14 days before I can eat it.

    add* Fillet and back strips are you best for making biltong.
