  1. make it yourself and you can use electrical tape

  2. could you make it yourself? buy an inexpensive dryerase board and use a ruler and a permanent marker or paint pen. caution...dryerase board cleaning spray will remove the permanent marker

  3. I don't exactly know what you are looking for in a grid for your D&D games, but the company Chessex makes dry- or wet-erase grids that are usable with miniatures games that are ~$20-40 each, with a price scale based on size (unless you really need the 4.5 feet x 8.5 feet mat which is $119).  Basically the mats come pre-printed with square or hex grids in varying sizes, and feature a numbering system to identify specific hexes (e.g. A24, Column A, Row 24; and a similar system for the hex grids).  As the mats are compatible with dry and wet-erase, you could draw out your scenario/map on the mat, or fill in areas as the characters "explore".  Also, since the mats are on a cloth-backed material, the mats can be easily rolled up and stored or transported.

You can find information about Chessex mats at the manufactuer's webpage: http://www.chessex.com or http://www.chessex.com/mats/Battlemats_&...
