Wondering if anyone can tell me the best place to hire a camper from we will be traveling from the north island and finishing in the south island. I've heard there are places that do special rates if they need a car taken back to the other island

  1. I would also enquire about going in the "opposite" direction to the "norm" you can get some much cheaper deals as they need to get the campers/cars etc back to depots etc

  2. Stay away from 2 companies ;

    Freedom and Wicked.

    They are dirt cheap but have no facilities and you will find yourself forever being asked to move on from any freedom site you have chosen.

    A law is at present being promulgated that will allow these vans to park overnight only if they are no further that 200 metres form public toilets and wash facilities.

    As others have suggested, try Britz, Kea, on any of the other well-known companies.

    Find them on Google.

  3. Maui and Britz do but the snag is you need to go directly there. You cannot take a week or three. You also do separate vehicles usually for each island. That deal is also often seasonal. But you may be lucky. They often do it in November.Other times I am unsure of.

    Check  http://www.holidays-in-newzealand.com/ne

    w-zealand-motorhome-hire.html  for some useful links.

    Check these out also - some may be too small? I am unsure what comfort level you are looking for.

    These have some good looking deals:

    I hope that helps you .Have a great trip.

  4. Hi

    The major campervan hire people are Britz (they have 2 other companies that they are also affiliated with) Try contacting these guys. Britz.co.nz.

    There is one other company called wicked-campers.co.nz - try these also.

    Alternatively try popping into one or 2 hostels in Auckland - Try ACB backpackers, Base Back Packers, Queen Street Backpackers. They often have details on their notice boards about any companies (car or campervan) who want their vehicles relocatting. Please note often this has to be done in a minimum period of time say 3 days - so you wont really see very much en route, and you will also be responsible for putting the vehicle on the ferry (can be expensive! Check Interislander.co.nz or strait.co.nz) It may be better to hire a car during the winter season to give you more flexibility. Try qualityrental.co.nz.

    Have  great trip!

    Either way enjoy your trip
