Question:

Cheap Party favors for a 3 year old?

My son is turning three next month and we're very short of funds. I'd still like to make little goodie bags or something for the kids to take home but don't have a lot of $$ to be extravagant. Any ideas on what I can put in the bags/boxes besides candy? I was thinking of getting those little Chinese takeout boxes from Michaels and using those. All the kids, save 4, are 2-3 years old.

  1. Dollar store!!. I got lots of stuff for the kids on my daughters birthday at the dollar store. Make your own cake too. Very easy and cheap. Just put the batter in round pans. If you do a double layered cake you can carve the edges down a little to make it look round instead of flat on the sides. Home made frosting is incredibly easy to make also and most people usually have the ingredients in their house as it is. Good luck. I hope he has a great birthday.

    Tools:

        * large bowl

        * Spatula

    Ingredients:

        * 1/2 cup solid vegetable shortening

        * 1/2 cup butter or margarine softened

        * 1 teaspoon Clear Vanilla Extract

        * 4 cups confectioner's sugar (approximately 1 lb.) sifted

        * 2 Tablespoons Milk

    Makes: Icing serves about 3 cups.

    Buttercream Icing

    instructions

    (Medium Consistency)

    1.In large bowl, cream shortening and butter with electric mixer.

    2.Add vanilla.

    3.Gradually add sugar, one cup at a time, beating well on medium speed.

    4.Scrape sides and bottom of bowl often.

    5.When all sugar has been mixed in, icing will appear dry.

    6.Add milk and beat at medium speed until light and fluffy.

    7.Keep bowl covered with a damp cloth until ready to use.

    8.For best results, keep icing bowl in refrigerator when not in use.

    9.Refrigerated in an airtight container, this icing can be stored 2 weeks.

    10.Rewhip before using.

    For thin (spreading) consistency icing, add 2 tablespoons light corn syrup, water or milk.

    For Pure White Icing (stiff consistency), omit butter; substitute an additional 1/2 cup shortening for butter and 1/2 teaspoon No-Color Butter Flavor. Add up to 4 tablespoons light corn syrup, water or milk to thin for icing cakes.

  2. If he wants a basketball cake, go to the dollar store or Party Central and get a little dollar toy for each of them that has a sports theme, plus a little cheerleader pom pom or a plastic baseball hat cup, anything along those lines.  The party store has cute blue ribbons (50 cents each) and attach it all together as a "sporting" gift bag.  You'll be out about 3 bucks per kid max.

    I'll warn you, those little chinese boxes from Michaels hold more candy than you think they will!  :)  Besides, candy isn't cheap anymore!

  3. For my sons party (hes 3)I put bouncy balls, whistles,bubbles,stickers.

    They all loved it and it was very inexpensive, I bought all the items at the party store I get his decorations from.

  4. Bubbles !  Crayons, side walk chalk, fruit snacks, animal crackers

  5. go to the party store. They have bags of stuff that you can buy in bulk.  Good luck.

  6. Check out ebay. You can get job lots of party favors for very little and alot of them are different from what you can buy in the shops. I did this for my sons birthday and saved a fortune

  7. Oriental trading co.com

    They have tons of stuff for pretty cheap.

  8. buy all party supplies from ebay or dollar store. make a homeade basketball cake. buy him a basketball. basketballs are only $10.00. You can alway buy him a basketball jersey from target that has his favcorite team on it.

    for the other kids: give them the party hat, birthday blower, sheet of stickers, print out coloring pages that associate with the birthday theme and a small box of crayons!!!

    Enjoy!!!

  9. You can try getting goodies in large bags..like Party sized..I usually go to Party City and buy a value bag..for my kiddos.  I also sometimes get some of the extra toys that are like 5cents each for the bags.  My middle child just turned 3 and this works.  Just remember, these toys will be OLD NEWS next week.  OH..and bubbles are always a hit..the dollar store sells these in sets of three..for a dollar.  GOOD LUCK!!

  10. Try hitting your local dollar store.

    They have aisle after aisle of cheap party favors.

    Hope this helped
