Cheap Used Car Registration?

My friend is leaving and giving me his car. There is no money exchanging hands,but since he's not family, we cannot write GIFT on the title for the price. What do I write as the price to avoid paying taxes on the blue book price? I'm not trying to pull a scam or anything, just wondered about writing the whole "$1" thing.

Yes,  write a check for $1.00 and make sure it is cashed.  They will probably question it but there is little they can do about it since it is a legal transaction.

I'd go for $0.00 or $1.00.  Make sure you have a sales receipt signed by the seller listing the car price, in case they question you.
