I have been wanting to learn or try the guitar for a while. I want to learn electric but a lot of ppl say to learnt the acoustic before. I was thinking if i bought a very cheap acoustic guitar from the net or a $2 shop would that give me a good idea on if i want to keep playing and get a better guitar. Also what would the sound be like on the guitar. Would a very cheap one actually be worth getting and would it make a decent sound.

  1. Go to your local pawn shop and test a few out... when you find one you like, just offer a lower price.

  2. A $2 shop? Don't waste your money.  Any guitar you'd buy there would be unplayable, suitable only as a decorative wall hanging or as a toy for a child.

And buying any musical instrument sight-unseen over the Internet is a risk because you can't see and try it out before you buy.

Very cheap new instruments are rarely worth getting, IMO.  They're constructed of shoddy materials with no care as to the workmanship, and will frustrate you to the point of giving up learning to play, because they're hard to play and sound terrible.

If I were you I would look around at pawn shops, garage sales, yard sales, and classified ads in your local newspaper for a used acoustic guitar.  Lots of people buy beginner level guitars in the $150 - $300 price range, take a few lessons or try to teach themselves from lessons on the Internet, get bored or frustrated, and quit -- and then put their guitars up for sale cheap.  Also ask around amongst friends, family and neighbors, you never know who has an old unused acoustic guitar under the bed or in the closet or attic, gathering dust.

  3. okay i dnt know where you live bbut if its in australia they have the reject shop and they are 40 dlooars for large guitars and 20 dolars for smaller ones:)

they also have 60 dollar acoustic guiater in aldi.

also try ebay ..its probs th best way or maybe borrow one of a friend.

  4. just get a hard top you like the feel shape and sound of. if your goal is learning the electric, then you should get a cutaway model because it is more similar to the available real estate on the fretboard of electric guitars.

i would get lighter strings to be more similar to electric guitars too.

and make sure you get a hard top acoustic. acoustic guitars get better with age, so they have good resale value if you take care of them. if i were you i'd buy a used acoustic for a decent price, keeping in mind that if you give it up you can get almost all of your money back, and if you don't then you have a guitar you're more happy to have.

i find in the cheaper zones washburns are nice. 400$ should get you a pretty good one new.  i would look to spend around 200-500$
