Cheap and good GPS to make a simple digital map of a cattle ranch?

I need to map a ranch in south america, just a simple map with the distances between outter limits. I've been checking the available GPS equipment.but the more I check the more lost I get.

I don't want to blow my budget on expensive equipments which I perhaps wont use more than twice, but I want to be able to transfer my readings to the computer and make a simple map.

Can anyone provide some light there? I have checked all garmin products but they talk more about already existing maps and not getting lost in trekking than creating maps, plus they dont seem to come with a software capable of transfering the digital readings and displaying them in a pc. (I just see street map software)

  1. the little GPS engine that comes with Microsoft Streets & trips will do exactly what you need.

Load the software, start the GPS, turn the Mouse Trail on, drive around the property line, drive the roads, you will get an accurate lay of the land.

You can even play around with line colors, assign the fence line on color, the larger roads still another, and the paths yet another.

You can find S&T2006 with the GPS on eBay for $49.00USD which is a good price.

Another option is the DeLorme Streets with GPS. Then go out and get a shareware program called WAYPOINT and overlay the DeLorme Streets.
