  1. ☻Accademia di Santa Cecilia

    Symphonic Kicks

    classical music ; live music

    Viale Pietro de Coubertin 34

    Tel: 06 808 20 58 (info)

Rome's major classical music organisation dates back to the 16th century, when it was founded by - among others - the composer Palestrina. The academy's year-round programme includes a world-class symphonic season and, in the autumn, a series of short festivals dedicated to individual composers. In summer, concerts move to the Auditorium's open-air arena.

The in-house orchestra was directed by the Korean maestro Myung-Whun Chung until October 2005, when Italian Antonio Pappano took over.

    ☻Alien

    Out of This World

    club/disco ; theme/speciality bar

    Via Velletri 13

    Tel: 06 841 22 12 (info)

Pure disco, Alien constantly changes its look to keep up with the newest fads. In its latest apparition it's lounge minimalist - flat maxi-screens on the walls, black leather sofas and satinised steel - and the music is house. Theme nights range from fetish to revival and there are also g*y nights.

    ☻Bar della Pace

    Picture-Perfect

    bar ; glam

    Via della Pace 5

    Tel: 06 686 12 16 (info)

People looking for images of la dolce vita would be hard pushed to find a better picture than the Bar della Pace. Sharp-dressed urbanites sip on their drinks, while behind them ivy cascades down the facade of the Art Nouveau cafe. It's not cheap, but as a place for an early-evening aperitivo in summer or a leisurely nightcap in winter, it takes some beating.

    Hours: 9:00am-3:00am

    ☻Baronato Quattro Bellezze

    African Beauty

    performance ; bar

    Via di Panico 23

    Tel: 06 687 28 65 (info)

Tucked away between Via dei Coronari and Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, Baronato is a quirky little find. Late on Thursday nights, drag-queen owner Dominot likes to treat patrons to a few dazzling Piaf renditions to piano accompaniment. A mainly Tunisian menu will sustain you through your cocktail tipples. Reserve a table for the Piaf show.

    Hours: Tue-Sun 7:00pm-3:00am

    ☻Black Out Rock Club

    Ready to Rock

    rock/pop

    Via Saturnia 18

    Tel: 06 704 96 791 (info)

For those out to rock, this is the place you'll want to be. Black Out has been ploughing its alternative furrow since 1979 and serves up a Molotov cocktail of punk, rock, ska and indie sounds, with occasional live bands.

    Hours: Fri-Sat 10:00pm-4:00am

    Web: http://www.blackoutrockclub.com

    Email: info@blackoutrockclub.com

    ☻Freni e Frizioni

    Grunge Chic

    cocktail lounge ; pub/beer hall

    Via del Politeanna 4-6

    Tel: 06 5833 4210 (info)

A hip, laidback booklined haunt (in a former garage, hence the name which means brakes and clutches in English) hung with cool modern art, this has tasty, cheap aperitivo and easy-on-the-eye clientele spilling into the small piazza.

    Hours: 3:00pm-2:00am

    ☻Stardust Live Jazz Bar

    Smoky Jazz

    jazz/blues ; food onsite

    Vicolo dei Renzi 4

    Tel: 06 5832 0875 (info)

A well-known Trastevere watering hole, Stardust is loved for its smoky jazz atmosphere. There's often live music and the bar staff are equally happy playing Rossini as they are Louis Armstrong. It's open in the afternoon for tea and serves snacks in the early evening but the real buzz kicks in later on. On weekends there's brunch with bagels and American coffee.

  2. There aren't going to be many.  These are really touristy spots.  If you would like to go to reasonable bars with locals go to the Termini and start walking away from all the touristy spots.  Go about 2 - 3 block in and you will find a ton of little sports bars.  We had such a blast in them.  It was during the rugby finals.

  3. mmh... i don't know, but u must stay careful because some bars do an expensive price for the tourists, i know because i'm italian and i know that some bars are not honest.(sorry if my english is not good).

    good travel

  4. i'm from australia.

i've just come back from rome and found that there weren't many actual bars there.  there are a lot of places that refer to themselves as 'bar' but, they are really just a cafe that sells alcohol.

i've never seen as many tourists in my life than i have in rome.  unfortunately, most of the city relies on this so we found that a lot of places we went to were overpriced for not very good quality food or drink.  this is especially the case near the tourist desinations.

ps.  it's considered fairly bad form to be drunk in rome, especially so if you're a woman.
