The kids have grown up and me and hubby would like to see the scenery and culture of E. Europe on a budget. Are there any agencies that offer cheap but safe accomodation even if its a room in a local persons house?

  1. Macedonia - hospitality, untouched nature, rich culture, Holy Land - one of the few countries mentioned in the Bible, great traditional food, amazing traditional folk music and dances, low prices, birth place of Mother Teresa, Kokino - the 4th oldest observatory in the world acording to NASA

    I'll suggest Ohrid

During the day you can go on any of the many beautiful beaches by the shore of the lake, do some shoping, sightseeing in the city or just sit in one of the many cafés in any of the narrow streets in the Old Town and enjoy. For all the young people, the nightlife is great and vibrant. The cafes work late at night, but there’re also so many nightclubs where you can carry on from there.

For sightseeing, there’re enormous many old churches, my favourite ones are Plaoshnik, more than 15 centuries old, St. Jovan Caneo, St. Naum… If you climb on the Samuil Fortress, just 5 min from the centre, you get amazing sight on the whole lake.

The Lake is clean, one of the oldest ones in Europe, from 1980 protected by UNESCO as a place of world cultural and natural inheritance. Most of the lake’s plant and animal species are endemic, which also makes Ohrid unique. The most famous among these are two types of Ohrid Trout. You should try them prepared on the traditional way.

Ohrid is also known as the site of the first Slavic university run by St. Clement and St. Naum at the end of the 9th century. Ohrid, also, used to be the centre of the orthodox Christianity in the whole region. There are 365 churches to be explored, one for every day of the year. They are even working on the Museum on water this year (on the place were a bronze age settlement used to be)..There’s so much history there…

And DO NOT miss a boat trip on the lake, especially at night, believe me one of a kind experience!!

I must not forget to mention the hospitability of the people there.

In the last few years Ohrid is soooo popular among foreign tourists, especially Greeks, Dutchmen, Bulgarians, Serbians, Izraelis, even Chinese people! So, check it out!!!

  2. Hostels

Price in Krakow - 50zł (10 pounds) Right now might be more expensive due to global economic instability.

  3. try a shed.

those are the safest places in eastern europe.

  4. Just look for backpacker/hostel groups on the net that will give you ideas of how much and how safe certain hostels are.  But Eastern Europe is a safe place to go these days but its also not as cheap as it used to be especially with the infulence of the euro.  Most of these countries currencies are tied to the euro if if the euro is c**p against the pound, which is is at the minute, then the respected countries currency will also be worse than it used to be but dont let that put you off.

  5. Here's an agency which offers a wide variety of travel experiences and can take you to places we Bulgarians love - places away from the beaten track. I recommend places like the Rila Monastery and the Seven Lakes area in Rila, the village of Shiroka Laka and the Wonderful Bridges in the Western Rhodopes, Perperikon and the Womb Cave in the Eastern Rhodopes, Sozopol, Burgas and Nessebar at the Southern Black Sea coast, then the traditional villages of Elena and Zheravna, Pliska and Preslav (the capitals of the First Bulgarian Empire), Veliko Turnovo (the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire, etc.

If you talk/write to them they might even offer you a tailor made trip.

If you are interested in the culture - the best thing is to have an experienced guide to tell you about the rich history of the places, maybe arrange for a night of authentic folklore with traditional food and drink, etc.

If you, however, want to explore on your own - with some fore-ward planning, that's also possible:

Just click on a region and explore!
