Cheap flights to London next June?

My Dad is planning on taking Mum to Wimbledon 2009 for her 40th birthday. Which airport is closest to Wimbledon? He's looking for the cheapest flights available from Glasgow to whichever airport is closest. Do you have any experiences with cheap short haul flights? Thanks :)

  1. Gatwick or Heathrow are closest. Definitely not Luton. Gatwick probably has cheaper flights but you could see if there are any cheap British Airways flights to Heathrow if you book early enough - and you seem to have plenty of time :-)

    Try looking at this:

Just one warning - be careful about fuel surcharges with the way the oil price is rising. You might end up getting a cheap flight and then paying a fortune on top!

  2. Heathrow airport is the closest to Wimbledon (11,7 miles/ 18,7 kilometers); Gatwick is 18,9 miles/30,4 kilometers away.

Both are fine since the travel distance from the airports to Wimbledon by public transport are almost equal.

From Heathrow it is recommended to take the underground to South Kensington, and change the line to Southfield Station (55 minutes).

From Gatwick, express trains take 30 minutes to Victoria Station, and the tube requires another 23 minutes.

About the development of energy costs, in its influence on flight prices in 2009? who knows.

  3. It's far too early to say how much a flight from Glasgow will cost next year, but flights within the Uk are not cheap. It will be better to keep an eye on the future costs of both Rail and flights, I suspect that your Dad will fond a cheaper deal on a train by booking in advance. There is also the matter of security at the airports, even though it is a domestic flight. There are several airports in and around London, but the cheaper airlines use Luton, Gatwick, or Stanstead, all of which will mean a train and tube journey, to get into London.

As it's your Mother's 40th have your Dad look and see if he can get travel, tickets and accommodation as part of a package, rather than separately.

    Try these links

    http://www.sportsworld.co.uk/wimbledon/m...

    http://www.sportstravel.com/tennis/wimbl...

    http://www.tennistours.com/event_pages/w...

The first one is the official hospitality agent for Wimbledon

  4. You'd better book the wimbledon tickets before or you are screwed.

Here's a site that will help on supplying cheap plane tickets:

    FlyAirfares.com

I think you should try Heathrow and then take a train to Wimbledon

  5. Unfortunately cheap and airlines are no longer made to go together. Especially in international flights. All I can recommend is watching the airlines like a hawk and try to find some sort of deal when you can. Maybe become a member on some and be offered deals. That's the only way you ll find cheaper flights.

    Best of Luck!

  6. he might want to look at taking the train from glasgow to london... booking ahead of time gets cheapest ticket and also first class for cheap..

  7. Heathrow is closest to Wimbeldon but Stansted has BY FAR the cheapest flighs. On some dates, usualy Tuesdays and Wednesdays you can fly for 1p from Glasgow Prestwick to Stansted with Ryanair, and that 1p includeds taxes and charges!!!

Put the following link in your favorates, it shows all the destinations from Glasgow and who flies there - www.flyglasgow.net.

To the person who said cheap flights dont exist anymore, your talking rubbish!!! I have 8 day trips booked and for them all I paid just 2p return with no taxes and charges added.
