Cheap gas in germany for americans?

Alright, my husband and I are going to germany in september. I'm german and he's american and he used to be in the army and was stationed in germany. He said he used to have coupons or something to get cheaper gas. Now that he's not in the army anymore he's wondering if there's still a way for him to get coupons for cheaper gas. If so, where can he get them? Or do you only have access to them when you're in the military?

We don't wanna spend all of our vacation money on gas :o/

Thanx for help!

  1. By asking a military person to buy gas coupons for you you are jepardizing their military career if they get caught.  That would be wrong, plus if you get caught the fine from the german customs police would eat up all your vacation money and maybe more.  You will pay over $6.00 per gallon at a german gas station, so you might as well set aside a few hundred bucks for gas.

  2. If he is not more in the military, he can't access the base for gas and also he can't get any gas coupons either.

He need to put gas by the German Gas stations, the prices are almost the same. By the Germans you can look for the prices they are very different.

  3. You only have access to the American Gas stations if you are in the military or a civilian working for the military. If you get coupons it is black marketing and you cant leaglly put that gas in a non-American plated auto.

  4. You wish !!!

  5. What Kadkins said is somewhat correct. Gas coupons can only be purchased on Military bases and you have to a Military ID-card holder in order to do it! Plus, you need a Military vehicle registration, not a German one! Even if you have someone to get the coupons for you the people at the gas station (Esso) might want to check your registration and they will look at the license plate number if it matches the one on the coupons!! I know that from own experience!! However, if you are driving a rental car that you got at the Military base  gas-coupons then it will be okay. But to do that you need to have an ID-card or someone to sign you on post!

  6. I'm sure he got cheap gas on account of being in the military.  When my husband was in the military, even though he was never stationed in Europe, we used to buy gas and groceries on the military bases because it was cheap.  Since then, we've had to buy Euros and pay expensive prices like everyone else.  I know of no deals just because someone is from the U.S.

  7. Without a Military ID you will not be able to even get onto a military kaserne/base. The price for 1 liter is now about 1.20 euro. (4 liters in 1 gallon). German rental cars are usually better on gas mileage especially Opel and Fiat Punto.  As you drive in Germany, look at the  stations. In general Aral is one of the cheaper once. Esso, BP and Shell are more expensive. Also smaller gas stations are usually cheaper. All depends where you fill up. try to stay away from autobahn and bigger  city gas stations. Just like the US they are not as cheap. Hope this helps...Have a Great Trip, :))

  8. Here is what you do....

You will have to find a Military base and someone to get them for you. They will have to have a registration for the vehicle and be willing to do it, which should be no problem. Also if you cannot find someone in the military, go to an ESSO tanksteller which is a gas station and you will easily find someone there since that is one of the only gas stations that the coupons are valid at. Shell is the other one but you have to be on the Autobahn at a rest stop one. I am almost sure that if you ask someone they will be more then happy to help you out or even sell you some. Germans don't really care who they are giving the gas to as long as they get paid.
