Cheap hotel rate if you book same day?

I booked online hotel room in Marriott last time I was in DC the same day I arrived there for only $80.00 checking now the prices to book the same room .. 3 weeks in advance it costs $260.00 !! do you have same experince ...it seems it is better to book late ?
