  1. There are no cheap hotels in Venice, unless, of course, you don't mind staying in a fleabag.  A decent hotel near St. Mark's Square is going to run about $300.

May I make another suggestion?  If you want a decent, clean hotel, you might consider staying in one of the towns just outside of Venice.  Last year, we arrived in the Venice area a day earlier than our reservation.  We stayed at a hotel in Spinea called the Hotel Raffaello.  It was rated at 3-stars and cost us less than $100, including breakfast.  There is a bus stop just outside the hotel and it is a very short ride to the place where you get boats to Venice.

  2. Hi, I stayed in Venice last January and we used a websitee called www.hostelbookers.com, it was really great, there are tons of affordable hotels, B & B's and hostels to choose from.  They all have ratings for cleanliness , location(my 2 personal favorites) atmosphere, fun and they all have pictures and tons of reviews from other guest ,so youu really get a good idea about the place you are staying in.  We booked  a B&B for $35 each a night, the couple also owned a hotel , when we went to go check in the wonderful owner let us stay at the hotel instead, because we had so much luggage.  It was so beautiful and classic venice with a view of the grand canal, I wish I could add a picture to this , it was so pretty.

  3. The areas you mentioned, St Marks and Rialto Bridge are usually very expensive BUT you can find b&b at cheaper prices. Remember that prices of hotels change with seasons (for example, February is considered high season because of the Carnival, summer as well). I suggest you this good site where you can find prices and areas where the hotels are located:

    http://en.venere.com/hotels_venice/?ref=...

Anyway, if you don't find anything good in those areas you can check other areas of Venice, because you will be able to walk to the major places or take a water bus to reach them.

  4. Try Locanda del Ghetto. I'm from the north west of Italy but any time I go to Venice I stay there. It is really worth

  5. If you check on www.trivago.co.uk, you can find the cheapest hotel prices for venice. The site brings together a lot of online hotel websites in order to get the cheapest deal. I think that you can also use a distance function as well to find the cheapest hotels near to st marks square.

  6. During my last trip I came across a website called http://www.cheaphotel-s.com . It has quite a large variety of hotels. You might wanna give it a try.
