  1. Nothing in Venice is really cheap because there ecom. is based on tourism. Last time I was there with my family and 5 ice creams cost us E50 which is like almost $60 these days and it was nothing fancy.

  2. If you want cheap in Venice, either get some pizza from a hole in the wall kiosk (delicioso!) or get some fresh produce at the outdoor market with some bread, wine and cheese and go have a picnic on the canal.

It doesn't get better then that! Enjoy!

  3. When I was there the cheap place that my friends and I ate at was not that good. There was this great place my friend and I stumbled upon when we got lost called "KONO PIZZA" and it was pretty inexpensive and was a walk up type of place. Not exactly fine Italian cuisine, but it worked! I wish I could remember where it was at, but I was there a little over a year ago...somewhere around Ponte di Rialto maybe?

Finding a market is always a cheaper thing to do also - you can make what you want and dine where you wish :)

  4. I agree that the "hole in the wall" type places are probably the cheapest places...especieally for pizza.....there was a pretty good place right next to Rialto bridge that tasted pretty good.

I tried another place, but I found it at night and in a thunder storm....all I remember is there were a heap of people sheltering in the same place as me waiting for things to calm down and I was eating my pizza!!!!

I ate in my hotel and that was pretty good ( set menu etc I think it was around 20 euros tho)......the pizza pieces were around 5 euro I think and a decent size.

  5. In general restuarants in Venice aren't cheap and it depends on what you consider cheap. Most restaurants post menus and you can check to see if anything sounds interesting and meets your budget. The following website has some restaurant reviews for typical places.

It will usually be cheaper (and often better food) if you find somewhere off the main tourist areas.

Personally, I like La Zucca or there's a restaurant with outdoor tables in Campo San Stefano that has good bruschetta. Da Raffaele is also good. They have tables next to a canal where the gondolas will pass by while you're eating.Tavernetta San Maurizio also has good food.

Pizza will be cheaper, but I haven't found anywhere in Venice that's as good as the aveage pizzeria here in Emilia Romagna.

You should be aware that some prices will be per etto - that's the price per 100 grams. If you buy fish (e.g., branzino) the fish will be weighed whole. In some places, you could end up paying 100 euro for just the fish.

  6. There are no cheap places to eat.... but there is one good and inexpensive one that I always go to and it's called the Taverna San Trovaso. It's next to the Accademia.

The house prosecco is always cold (and if ain't send it back!), the fish fresh for the high turnover and everything pretty good. Even the pizza (and calzone - my preferred - is always too much for one person) is good.

The Zucca (pumpkin) is a cool place (the closest thing you'll find in town to vegetarian) is just off Campo San Giacomo dell'Orio.

Go to the supermarkets ("Billa" or " COOP"), buy some good ham, fresh bread, vino (don't forget to pack your Swiss knife) & fruit.... and feast in your hotel room. Eating outdoors picknic style is frowned upon by the locals and it's illegal in Piazza San Marco. Go to the park beyond the Biennale gardens to San Elena, next to the Morosini Naval Acadamy, wehere you'll find a lovely park - you can picknic there comfortably on the tree covered grass.

  7. i have no reccomendations, but know this, if it's near one of the big tourist spots (st mark's square, etc), it's not going to be worth the money, basically, get off the beaten path, find a place where the locals go, italians take nothing more serious than their food, so if you find a place that isn't catering to tourists, you'll find a place that serves great food.

then again, eating on st marks square can be great, live music, great atmosphere, etc
