The cheapest rail tickets are those brought in Advance for longer journeys, non refundable and subject to heavy restrictions. Otherwise it is either an Off Peak Saver or Cheap Day ticket depending where you are in the country and how far you are travelling.

There are discount cards availiable for on average £20 per year, but depending on age and circumstances they may not help and again are restricted mainly to off peak travel.

Best thing to do if you are enquiring is go into your local station after 9am and ask the ticket assistant there about your journey and best price possible.

www.thetrainline.co.uk.  make sure you search for 2 singles and not a return.  if you dont need them to be flexible and you are willing to book a certain time train, you will get great deals on here.  I bought a single ticket to wales from london and it was 11 pounds.  good luck
