Question:

Cheaper alternative to a hobby/craft cutting mat?

Okay, all I want to do is have an area where I can work on crafts (Sewing, jewelry, and some other art projects) and I need something cheap that will protect my desk, that's not a cutting mat. Also, if anyone knows a good place to buy supplies for those types of crafts mentioned above for cheap, I would love to know.

  1. A thin sheet of plywood would do a good job of protecting your desk. There is also a wood sheet called Luan that is thin and light weight and can be cut with a multiple forceful passes using a utility knife.

Both are available at hardware or lumber stores (I'd get mine at Home depot or Lowes).

Gluing a layer of cardboard or felt on the underside would provide a bit more protection against scratching the desk.
