Cheaper areas to rent a studio or houseshare in London?

I've been living in a little market town in Surrey since I left home 7 years ago. I am very very bored!

I would like to live and work in London for a few years - ideally I would rent a room in a house share or rent a studio. Can anyone advise me of the more affordable/cheap areas to look around?

Most bedsits single rooms or studios that are affordable in the west London area can be found in the Earls court area or the W2 Paddington Bayswater end, its really going to depend on what part of London your thinking of moving to as one area can differ greatly from another

There's an area called Purfleet in Essex just after Dagenham in East London that's really cheap.  I'm currently renting a 1 bedroom flat there for £450 a month and is furnished too, you really do get value for your money.  I live there and work in Ealing, West London.
