  1. The cheaper time to travel is always on the South American Summer. January to March. If you arrive to Peru on February you must visit Puno due to the Virgen de la Candelaria Festivities. Also go to Macchu Picchu anytime of the year!

I recommend you buy your tickets asap. I also recommend you to fly Lan, because of the entertainment systems for each passenger. That way the teenagers won't get bored. When you book your flight with Lan be sure to ask if the plane has the entertainment system.

Also, you get cheaper tickets if you call their hotline instead of searching online. I found a ticket for $800, tried to buy it but I wasn't fast enough, then I called their agency and they got me a $700 airfair! Of course they charged a $5 extra fee for their help, but that worked out fine because i saved $95. Most tickets at the moment are costing between $900 to $1100, so you have to plan  it quick.

About Hotels in Lima I recommend the Marriott, Los Delfines, Miraflores Park Hotel.

Hotels in Cusco, I recommend Orquidea Real. The hotel is rustic and cozy. The customer service is marvelous. They do everything possible to make you feel welcome and it's also cheap! hint: stay on the 2nd floor( if you stay on the 1st floor you will hear lots of creaking).

    Good luck!

  2. Hola Lillie! There are many places that you can visit here, if its your first time in peru i recommend you to visit arequipa ( colca cayon), cuzco ( include macchupicchu of course) and puno ( with titicaca lake and taquile island tour). You can do it : one day in lima, then you travel to arequipa for 3 days, then go arequipa-cuzco for 4 days, then flight cuzco-puno for 3 days and then you return puno-lima to go to your country. September /october could be a good time to travel cause since november to february there are rains in that places ( but the turist visit these places all the year!!!. About hotels, if you want one confortable, good ubication, good staffs, you can go to Hotel Casa Andina . The webpage is www.casa-andina.com . you will find this hotel in arequipa, lima, cusco and puno!! the rate include a good breakfast!! They have a good rate and not too expensive as others.

About tours i recommend you :

in arequipa.- One day in the city, valley, convento de santa catalina, the next day very early go to colca cayon ( you can take a night there in chivay town, there are a casa andina hotel there too!!) then you must be  one night and the next day in the afternoon return to arequipa to go to cusco. You will be so happy to see that place!!

In cusco .- when you arrive, take a rest for the altitude ( only some hours ), one day to  do the principal city tour, sacsayhuaman, kenko, tambomachay. The next day go to macchupicchu, the third day go to urubamba valley visiting chincheros and ollantaytambo of course!.

In puno.- One day in the city, the next visiting uros island and of course you must go to taquile island!! And  you will go for the titicaca lake!! Puno is the capital of the folclore!!

In lima .- i think one day is enough to know historic places (in the center and barranco) , but if you want to know other may be one day more to go to "caral" ruins and our museum of gold that its amazing!.

Please, dont forget to do a gastronomic tour, remember that peruvian food is one of the best in the world!! And our peruvian drink : PISCO SOUR!!

If you think that i can help you more, i will be happy to answer more questions!!

Note.- May be you must go one day more in cusco, i am sure you will love that place !!

  3. I would book tours etc when you are there, not through companies in the USA. Knowing some Spanish would help, but most places selling tours knew enough English to get by. A phrasebook would be useful though!

And for booking accommodation, have a look at sites like hostelworld.com - you can check out the facilities, photos, and feedback.

It's probably a good idea to book accommodation in advance. We went and in some places just turned up and expected places to be available, but they weren't always so we ended up paying a bit more than we expected.
