  1. For single trips a bus will be much cheaper than the tube, especially if you pay by Oyster card.

I think students do get discounted travel, but you have to be a full time student at a recognised university or college.

  2. All public transport in London is expensive compared to most other countries.

Look at getting an Oyster card to get the best price. Bus is cheaper than tube

Depends on where you're going at to which is easiest. I'm a big fan of the buses but since there aren't bus lanes throughout the whole city (do it Boris!) tube is generally bit quicker.

  3. Bus is cheaper, but the tube is often quicker and more direct.

If you aren't just here on holiday, you should get an Oyster card. This is the easiest way to pay for your fares, and it offers discounts.

Check if you qualify for an 18+ student discount Oyster card here:

You can find all the info you will need about ticket prices on TFL's website. It also has a useful journey planner if you are new to London.

  4. I dont come from there, but visit lots!

I use an Oyster card on the tubes because tube stations are situated near most attractions!

  5. i guess tube is cheaper, and yeah its cheaper for students but about the age im not sure

  6. I agree with The Elegant Epicure.  It would have been my answer too to use the Oyster Card.

My sister and Brother in law was here a couple of weeks ago from Canada and found the Oyster card to be pretty efficient. They were here for about 2mths.  If you are just a visitor for the day, a day card would be enough and they can also be used for the buses.

Firstly, no need to mess around looking for the right change.  Buy one lump sum, ie £10 and the scanner deducts the right amount each time you zapped it on entry and return.

Secondly, you can use it on buses all around London.

Thirdly, when the maximum amount of capping (ie if zone 1 is £4.50) has been used for any particular zone, no more money will be deducted.

On each scanner, it will show you your balance each time you scan the oyster at the barrier.  Top up as necessary.

I am sure you will agree once you get the hang of it, that the Oyster Card is brilliant!

  7. Depending on your age you could travel for free on buses and underground - provide your age and someone else will give you a full answer.
