Question:

Cheapest Travel from Windsor to Montreal?

Via Rail seems far to pricey, driving is cheapest but we have too many people and maybe no car. Any cheap bus services? Grey Hound still too pricey. Even if the trip take extra hours, as long as we get there cheaper. Ideas?

  1. Windsor to Montreal is about a 9-10hr drive, and approximately 900km. so let's do some calculations.

My car averages about 500 km per tank of gas, mostly highway driving. So expect to use about four tanks of gas to get from Windsor to Montreal and back. At $1.40 per litre, that's a little over $200 for the trip.

If you are 4-5 people in a midsize sedan, that's $50 each. Add to that the cost of rental per day for the car, if no one has a car that big. If you need something bigger, you can rent a mini-van for 7-8 people, but naturally gas prices are going to be higher...bigger tank and it uses more.

If you use Voyageur-Greyhound bus lines, it will take you more than ten hours to get from Windsor to Montreal, as I believe they stop at certain depots along the way to take on or let off passengers. The costs will be whatever an adult ticket is from Windsor to Montreal, and you won't have access to a car when here. You may need to take one or more taxis from the bus terminal, so factor in that cost too.

Via Rail offers rail service that goes right to Central Station in Montreal from Windsor. That is downtown Montreal, and it may be walking distance to your hotel from there.

Likely, the only faster way would be to fly, but since you have to get there 1-2hrs early for a flight anyway, probably would not be that much quicker than a train, and I'd bet more expensive. And you end up in Dorval so it is a $40+ taxi ride to downtown.

This info should help you make the appropriate decision on your own.
