Hi guys-my elderly parents need to travel by train from Bournemouth to York on Friday 28th December.

They have heard there is a really low price ticket avaiable with Virgin trains-but I can`t find the info online anywhere.

They need a directy train as dad is frail and changing would be a nightmare for them-they will have luggage.

Can anyone advise me ?

They both have senior rail cards too.

Many thanks.

  1. You will find the journey extremley restrictive with the conditions you require as I believe there is only 1 train per day leaving Bournemouth going to York. It is extremley slow and takes around 9hrs to get there. If they can it may be easier for them to change at Birmingham, if you contact the Travel Assistance line for SWT / Virgin, you will be able to book assisted travel for them so people will be on hand to help with luggage, transfer and at the bigger interchanges convey them even from platform to platform if the facilities exist.

Goto Bournemouth Railway Station and enquire, Xmas period tickets are just coming online into the system now.

    Hope this helps.

  2. The fare for you and me one way would be £37.50. So it should be cheaper than that with a OAP Card. The train leaves at 11:45 and arrives at York at 17:29. The train is operated by Virgin Cross Country and is the Bournemouth to Glasgow Central Service. There are no changes. I would suggest visiting the site below to see what you can come up with otherwise call the National Rail Helpline or visit your nearest staffed station for further details.

  3. You will not find a cheap ticket available on Virgin as they loose the cross-country franchise on 11 November. The new cross-country service will be provided by Arriva Trains. Their website is http://www.crosscountrytrains.co.uk/ but they are currently only booking up to the 21 December. That web-site says there will be more information when the franchise has started. There are currently NO through trains from York to Bournemouth - your parents would either have to travel through London which seems to be the preferred way on checking with thetrainline.com, although there are longer (in travel time) Cross Country services with a change at Birmingham New Street

  4. the Great Central used to have this service, but it's nearly all gone now, sorry, just reminiscing!,what a shame.

  6. Hi, I dont think Virgin Trains go through York, they tend to go up north by the West Coast route, but there is a new service called Virgin CrossCountry (VXC) which bypasses London completely linking the south coast with the north, but again I am not sure if York is a stopping station en route.

GNER definitely go through York this is the route I use to visit my parents in Scotland, but I dont think GNER have trains from the south coast.

These 1st two links explain the routes and the next two are the links to the actual train companies and ticket sales etc, but I would advise to book asap as there will be a lot of Scots booking these trains to travel home for Hogmanay.

Good luck and I hope your parents have a stress free journey :))
