Cheapest place to live in england that's close by london?

see i'm curious about moving to england for a couple of years and if i'm lucky would hopefully find a really cheap apartment if that's even possible, but still an ok location and still have some money saved up for when I go backpacking through europe.. if anyone could tell me the best place that would be awesome.. thanks for taking the time to read this.. =)
