Cheapest way to get from Long Beach to San Diego

I need to find an inexpensive route to travel from LA or Long Beach to San Diego. Driving will cost me 40 bucks round trip but I'd like to know if there's a cheaper alternative. The amtrak says it's 50 bucks each way, so please dont put that. I'm really broke, so any help is appreciated!! Thank You!

You could take Metrolink and Coaster.

Metrolink shares tracks with Amtrak but it only goes up to Oceanside.  At Oceanside you have to get off and get onto a Coaster train which goes to SD.

You can try checking with a bus company. Other than that, you're best bet is to drive.
