My boyfriend is going to Iraq soon and I was wondering what is the cheapest way to get phone calls from him when he is able to call home? I don't have a land line I only have my Sprint cell phone. Are there any like calling cards for cell phones or something like that? What is the cheapest way and how much does it cost? Thank you :)

  1. The best thing for him to do is use the VOIP - Voice Over Internet Phone.  Its about 3 cents a minute and most MWR centers have them.

  2. Try SMSDiscount.com, Nonoh.net

    Best, cheapest of the lot!

  3. If he knows someone who will be on base stateside he can call the base through the DSN line.  I do not believe he will be charged for the call (it goes through the military's phone service).  Then the person on base can forward the call to you on your cell phone.  We use to do this all the time for the soldiers over in Iraq to talk to their family or girlfriends when I was stationed at Kings Bay.  We were a sub station but some of the reservists lived close to the base so we felt like it was the right thing to do.

  4. They have cell phones over there, but they are expensive to use, if your calling back to the states, but sprint should have some sort of international plan that will allow you to bounce off other networks signals and use there service. I do recall that international plans are not cheap either. So other than the internet, phone calls can be pricey!

  5. skype is good adn so are phone cards depending on how the time gets broke down. skype is good because he wont have to go to a crowded, hot , stinky phone bank where you have to whisper. go skype

  6. Use Skype and use your computers to talk over the internet.  It will be free.

  7. Go to afees.com and purchase a 500 Min AT&T card...

it is the cheapest around...you can send it directly to him...

Tell him I said I think he is a Hero !!!!

Stay Low & Keep Moving !!!!

  8. A lot of soldiers go to the free Internet Cafes and use the yahoo messenger to chat with their friends and family.  He may have to have his own microphone, though.

  9. you don't need to change your plan.  he can call the states and it won't cost YOU more than any other incoming call.  he can buy phone cards there, it is expensive for him no matter what.  these people are right, internet is gonna be the best way.

  10. Well, the internet connection over there sucks, so don't do skype, it'll leave you both frustrated.  You can receive calls from Iraq on your cell phone for no charge, but he needs a calling card to call out.  They do get expensive, and the ones you buy stateside don't work so well because by the time the call connects you only have about 5 minutes of talk time on a 500 minute card.  He can buy cards that work better over there.  He can use the DSN line for morale calls but he only gets 10 minutes once a week.  Instant messengers are the best way to go, and they kept my husband and I in contact quite well.  I got one phone call a week for the most part (sometimes more if he was having a bad week) but instant messenger is the cheapest way to go, especially if you get a web cam and he has access to one.
