  1. You may found and asking for more information to US embassy/consulate in Italy

    As for pets:

    1) Should be identifiable by a clearly readable tattoo or an electronic identification system (transponder/microchip), which provides the pet owner’s name and address;

    2) Have a valid vaccination against rabies.

    (at least 20 days before, no more than 11 months before)

    certificate must be issued by a veterinarian certified in your Country for such kinds of travelling documents.

    Remember in Italy a muzzle for dogs that walk on the streets or any other open space without a leash; a muzzle and a leash for dogs in public places and public transportation are mandatory.

  2. A one way ticket?  You better have a good explanation for customs/immigrations as to why you don't have evidence of onward or return travel or you won't be permitted entry into the country.  Your dog will likely be subject to quarantine for a month before being permitted entry into the country, unless perhaps it is a seeing eye dog.  You need to have travel insurance to cover you for health.  Any national health programs in Italy will not cover you unless you are a citizen.

  3. Find a ticket on travelocity or cheaptickets.  I spent $421 for a RT fare.  Fly near Venice and take the ferry.  Your dog-if you have papers valid from previous 6 months for all shots, it will not be quarantined. But it MUST have an I.D. computer chip under it's skin.  If the dog is small, u can put it in a carrier under your seat (one animal per person) - otherwise, it must ride in the cargo. 20,000 pets per year are lost or die. That's an estimate. They are now keeping track. Do NOT give your dog a tranquilizer - it could die.

  4. The cheapest way is to fly into Germany and take the train down. As for the dog, yes it will be quarentined so leave it at home. As for health care, it is only free if you are from Italy, otherwise, you need Blue Cross.
