  1. Get a truck

  2. NEVER, EVER, rent from U-Haul. They have the worst safety record of any rental company, with several fatalities last year from faulty equipment rented out to unsuspecting movers. They have the oldest fleet and their trucks have major mechanical problems. The same goes for their trailers. They aren't kidding when they say "Adventure in moving". Not my idea of a positive "adventure".

We used Budget and were very happy; had a brand-new truck and the guy at the rental place was well trained.

The rates are what they are, I'm afraid.

You could look into having your stuff moved by common carrier, like Yellow Freight, GI Trucking, or the like.

Another alternative would be a regular moving company, like Mayflower or Allied. Movers go by estimated weight of goods transported, and the rates are regulated by the ICC (Interstate Commerce Commission, a federal agency). I'd bet it would be cheaper to go that way.
