My mom and I are travelling to Italy and greece this summer. I have been looking into the eurail passes but im not sure if thats they best way to go. Our trip includes a few ferry trips and the eurail pass says theres discounts off them, if i use that discount does it count as a day on the rail pass?

This is our itinerary:

-Venice-->Florence

-Florence --> Rome

-Rome-->Salerno

-Salerno-->Bari

-Bari-->Patras (Ferry)

-Patras-->Athens

-Piraeus-->Santorini

-Santorini-->Mykonos

-Mykonos-->Athens

  1. I wouldn't get a Eurail pass for Italy and Greece, since Italian trains are cheap anyway and you can't use the pass on Greek ferries.

    The Eurail pass can be a good deal for someone taking a lot of trips in or between France, Germany and Scandinavia, where trains are much more expensive.  But for Italy and Greece just pay for trains and ferries out of pocket and you will spend much less than the cost of the pass.

  2. Check out ryanair.com, which is a airlines based in Europe.

    Their flights are very reasonable. They might not have flights to all of the cities on your itinerary, but it may save time on a few of the cities you plan on visiting.

  3. I would suggest not spending your money on a eurail pass. I just got back from a trip with my mom from Greece to Italy, Switzerland then France. Despite all the international traveling we did, it was STILL cheaper than what we would have gotten if we got a eurail pass. Plus, since you are only doing two countries, there is really no point in getting the eurail pass, especially since Greece does not really have a lot of places where you could use the eurail pass. Train travel in Italy is fairly cheap, and you can get student discounts if you get an ISIC card. The ferries between Italy and Greece are reasonable, and ferries within Greece are fairly reasonable too. Usually you can buy the train tickets the same day you want to leave, except I would suggest buying the ferry tickets in Greece at least a day or two in advance because it can fill up during heavy holiday traffic. Have fun! Oh and a quick tip, when you go to Florence, make sure you aren't there on a Monday because everything is closed!
